Subject: TORPEDO: The Nutraceutical Research & Education Act - NREA!!!!

IAHF List: It is imperative that we send Clint Miller to this conference to
monitor it, and I'm appealing to you all for help towards that end. If you
can help, please send a donation to Clint
Miller at 139 Northmont Dr. Statesville, NC 28625. The writing is on the
wall. If we don't torpedo the NREA, we can kiss the supplement industry
goodbye. The bill hasn't been introduced yet, but it will be, and De Felice
is VERY dangerous.

In 1990 I was one of a large number of people who had 5 minutes at the
microphone at a public meeting convened by the FDA in the aftermath of the
passage of the NLEA. FDA was mandated by law to solicit public input on how
vitamins should be reguated under the new law. People on both sides of the
issue were in attendance, and you could cut the tension in NIH's Masur
auditorium with a knife.
Ken Mehrling of Sigma Tau Pharmaceuticals was there representing De Felice,
who's product, Carnitour, they were licensed to sell. "Carnitour" is an FDA
approved pharmaceutical version of the amino acid l-carnitine. De Felice
and Mehrling want a monopoly on l-carnatine, and I heard Mehrling spout off
with all kinds of GARBAGE whereby they wanted FDA to ban l-carnatine and
ONLY allow their product to be sold.

Need I say more? Please read the following VERY carefully, and please visit
De Felice's website at
http://www.fimdefelice.org/currentconf.html to scope the jerk out. He used
to work for Pfizer, and was a fellow at NIH. I have talked with him and
he's a very charming, very greedy guy who unfortunately is also a gifted
shmoozer and he has some BIG BUCKS behind him, as symbolized by his holding
his meeting at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, and due to his being
able to get Senators Frist, Harkin, and Congressman Pallone to attend.
Clint is going to need some $$BUCKS$$ just to get in the door----- anyone
with deep pockets who may be able to help, please call Clint at
704-924-8615. He's closer than I am, and he's the most experienced health
freedom lobbyist in the world. He deserves our help in getting to this event.

The Foundation for Innovation in Medicine (FIM)
                      10th Nutraceutical Conference

                      NUTRACEUTICALS &
                      PHARMACEUTICALS TAKEN
                      TOGETHER: A NEW HEALTH
                      SECTOR

                      plus

                      A New FIM Congressional Proposal:
The Nutraceutical Research & Education Act
                      - NREA

                      November 10-11, 1998
                      The Waldorf-Astoria
                      New York

                      Registration Information

Nutraceuticals (include the legal-regulatory entities dietary supplements,
foods
and medical foods) are being consumed together with pharmaceuticals by a
large percentage of the U.S. population. We must assume that to a significant
degree, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals interact with each other, having a
significant impact on disease- either beneficially or detrimentally. There
is little
doubt that this potentially enormous new health sector already exists.
There is
also little doubt that the medical community, health industry, and federal
government are not addressing this new explosive health sector.

FIM announces a 1 1/2 day conference which will present the current
information on the business and regulatory aspects of foods, medical foods
and dietary supplements. Also included will be presentations on actual or
virtual clinical trials of nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals taken
together. A
medicine versus law panel regarding claims will follow each presentation. The
physicians will propose claims based on the clinical data itself. The lawyers
will propose claims based on federal law and regulations.

Products to be discussed are Benecol, Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice, St.
John's Wort, Intelligent Quisine, Zocor, Cispro, Prozac and
Antihypertensive Pharmaceuticals.

The Nutraceutical Research & Education Act - NREA

In 1991 FIM published its white paper, "The Nutraceutical Initiative: A
Proposal for Economic and Regulatory Reform". In it FIM called for
Congress to enact The Nutraceutical Research & Education Act NREA. We
believe that this proposal may be a timely solution to the current state of
confusion which would expedite the establishment of a vigorous
research-oriented nutraceutical industry.

Authorities from various health sectors will participate and make comments
and recommendations on the FIM proposal, including members of Congress,
both the House and the Senate corporate medical and legal thought leaders,
who play key roles in formulating U.S. health policy. There is little doubt
that
the time has come for new nutraceutical laws and regulations.
