Ulm Cathedral in Germany

One of the outstanding creations of Gothic art is the Ulm Cathedral in Germany. Moreover, it is the highest cathedral in Europe.
Its construction was laid in 1377. And it was made with donations from local residents. Heinrich Parler became the architect of the church, but since the construction was delayed for centuries, there were several architects. It was only in the 19th century that it was finally completed.
Initially, the cathedral belonged to the Catholic Church. Currently, it is a Protestant church. Such a radical change was a consequence of the reformation.
The gigantic size and grandeur of the cathedral amaze the eye. It is thanks to these dimensions that the Ulm church is commonly called a cathedral. Although it does not have the status of a cathedral.
The cathedral is three-nave and is made in the Gothic style. So the height of the spires reaches 161 m . The church itself is huge. The main western tower of Munster has 768 steps, overcoming which, you can contemplate the splendor of the opening view. First of all, the city of Ulm, the main attraction of which is the cathedral.
The tower building itself has three naves — the central one and two side ones. The portals are decorated in the form of various biblical scenes. So, in the Small Portal of Mary, you can watch the scene of the adoration of the Magi and the Nativity of Jesus Christ. The great portal of the Virgin Mary is the most solemn. It includes three bas-reliefs. The middle bas—relief depicts the procession of the Magi, on the side - the birth of Christ and the adoration of the Magi.
Of particular value to the interior are stained glass windows, a large number of which were damaged or completely lost during the Second World War. So, the stained—glass windows have reached us, which depict scenes from the childhood of Christ, the resurrection of Christ.
The main altar is decorated with the faces of the holy family — Anna, Mary and Jesus. Its creator is Martin Schaffner.
Also, the pride of the cathedral is the oak benches that have been perfectly preserved to this day. They are made in the Gothic style of dark oak. Their creator was Jorog Zirlink. Initially, the benches were arranged in such a way as to separate the male and female halves. On the southern, female side, sculptures of soothsayers were used as decorations. But on the male side, the northern one, there are sculptures of philosophers.
