IAHF LIST:
I haven't yet seen the documentary described below, Masks of Madness: Science of Healing A new documentary on the orthomolecular treatment of schizophrenia but plan to order it. See the description of the video below my comments. I get frequent email and calls from people seeking information about how I recovered from schizophrenia 22 years ago via orthomolecular medicine using vitamins. The two best sources of information on orthomolecular medicine are the Canadian Schizphrenia Foundation http://www.orthomed.org and the Well Mind Association of Greater Washington http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/WMIND/
Mental illness of all kinds destroys lives causes immense pain and suffering to individuals and their loved ones. I can't easily describe the pain I felt during the 4 years I was locked up in mental hospitals before learning about orthomolecular medicine, but it was the most painful experience of my life because the doctors in those hospitals had no idea how to help me or anyone else and all around me were people who had totally given up hope. What saved my life was 3 books my aunt sent me about orthomolecular treatment, because from them I realized that I had a chance to get well, but my Dr. was biased against it and refused to let me try it. In the end, I had to get kicked out of that hospital and into one in the state where I eventually got help through an orthomolecular outpatient clinic, unbeknownst to the hospital I was in at the time. I was forced to smuggle in the nutrients that I needed and hide them in a cavity gouged out from the underside of my mattress while mouthing their dangerous, toxic, ineffective pharmaceutical drugs and spitting them down the toilet where they belonged. They stole 4 years of my life from me- more than that actually because of the hell I went through and the longer period of time it took me to recover than if I'd gotten on an orthomolecular program right from the start- while still in high school.
Three weeks after I started taking the vitamins they gave me a medical discharge while scratching their heads wondering which of their drugs were finally helping me. None of them were, but if I had told them they never would have let me out. No one should have to go through the hell that I did. Please get this video and watch it. Please tell more people about it and about orthomolecular medicine. This video needs to be translated into numerous foreign languages and spread all over the world, especially to Germany and to Dr.Rolf Grossklaus, Chairman of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Use- and delegates from all countries on that Committee. We really need to do this in conjunction with making the video that I discussed previously.

Produced by Sisyphus Communications in conjunction with the CSF. 49 minutes, 1998 For the past year the CSF has been hard at work producing a documentry on the orthomolecular approach to mental illness, and the finished film is now ready for prime time. This documentry will be aired on television and is also available to the general public as a video. Masks of Madness: Science of Healing chronicles the experiences of patients and health care profession als who went beyond the inadequacies of conventional psychitry to find their answers in or thomolecular medicine. Hosted by actor Margot Kidder who herself suffered from manic depression, we hear how she finally recovered using orthomolecular medicine. Other former patients participate in a roundtable discussion of their individual descents into mental illness, their extraordinary difficulties in getting answers from conventional psychiatry, and their final recoveries using diet, vitamins and a minimum of pharmacological intervention.
Doctors and other health professionals recount their experiences as well. Abram Hoffer, Patrick Holford, Hugh Riordan, Hyla Cass, Bradford Weeks, Michael Janson and others recount for us their therapeutic methods, their professional satisfaction at seeing patients actually recover from the "incurable," as well as the political dangers they faced when incorporating orthomolecular medicine into their psychiatric practices. The major orthomolecular building blocks to optimal mental health are introduced in an understandable way with the goal being to demonstrate that yes, orthomolecular medicine is a real answer for people suffering mental illness and physicians who long to make real changes in the lives of their patients. This is a documentary which everyone, including health professionals, will benefit from watching.
